Pen To Opportunity

Misty has spent the last two decades working with the University of South Carolina’s Sumter campus, but she’s never bored with her job as Marketing and PR Director.

“Like most people in creative positions, I am not happy doing the same thing every day,” she says.

Her work involves everything from branding to reaching out to alumni, and BoxUp has recently helped her promote the university at their annual Campus Day event. By giving out cool socks in well-designed boxes, Misty was able to represent her campus in the style it deserves.

Beyond appealing to prospective students, the university holds an annual University of Possibilities for students in grade six through high school to expose them year after year to higher education. BoxUp boxes came in handy for that, as well, as students walked away with packages of socks, sunglasses and lanyards.

“They loved them!” says Misty.

Raising awareness for her university comes naturally to Misty, because it’s a learning environment she genuinely believes in. “I work for a small university that is part of a huge university; we have the benefit of a small campus, but the association with the university brand. I am proud to be both a Gamecock and a Fire Ant!” she says, and the students she shares her campus with tend to agree:

“I have a multitude of stories, and almost all of the alumni I have ever interviewed say they are thankful they chose USC Sumter.”

As the person in charge of making USC Sumter an option for prospective students, this is something Misty can be proud of.

Even including her small struggle with the social media aspect of her work, Misty truly loves how her job keeps her on her toes. “I have learned a lot over the years and continue learning each day. I love the opportunity to be creative and have an impact on a student’s choice to come here,” she says.

It’s work she deeply enjoys, and she plans to stick with it until retirement. With plenty of love from family to keep her going, years of experience and a career she believes in, shining that positive light on USC Sumter comes naturally to Misty. BoxUp has certainly helped her to do that, and after her Campus Day event, enrollment has been up twenty percent over last year.

But what would she do if she weren’t already doing what she loved?

“If I wasn’t doing what I am doing, I would totally love to be a DJ in Vegas! That’s my secret dream job.”
