Corrugated Cardboard is a Material with a Future
“The cultivation of flowers and trees is the cultivation of the good, the beautiful and the ennobling in man, and for one, I wish to see this culture become universal.”J. STERLING MORTON
At BoxUp, we speak the language of tech with a DIY web-based design platform and an e-commerce platform that harnesses the full power of the digital world. However, our end product is an output of the forest industry, so we are also embedded in the tangible world of natural resource production and consumption. As such, we agree with statement of Mr. Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, and we take seriously our role in being a sustainable force for good.
We are conscious of the impact that production and consumption has on the planet. We recognize the comparative environmental advantages of corrugated cardboard over other forms of packaging. Unlike many forms of plastic or other materials, our material is not landfill-bound. Nor does it come wholly from virgin sources. The corrugated BoxUp uses is 50% or greater in recycled content and is 100% recyclable.
Our raw material is supplied by companies certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, (SFI). SFI is the largest single forest standard in the world – a standard backed by continuous research. It’s an initiative BoxUp takes part in freely and with enthusiasm. We build our boxes to last – we’ve got lots of great ideas for re-use, or “upcycling,” (here, or here) – but we also recognize the impact of any consumption. We believe in the value and ideals behind good stewardship of our planet’s resources.
BoxUp believes that corrugated cardboard is a material with a future. In large part, our company is built upon the advantages of this material and the idea that it is built for the future. Our experience with corrugated cardboard, our knowledge of today’s business environment, and, finally, our foresight into the future of the American economy and how people remain efficient and effective while delivering high-touch products convince us that corrugated cardboard is a smart bet.
Corrugated cardboard is the sustainable packaging of a sustainable future:
- The paper and forest products industry itself has moved toward obtaining energy from renewable sources and drastically cut reliance on fossil fuels for production.
- Most of the product is composed of greater than 50% recycled material.
- It’s 100% recyclable.
- It’s re-usable.
- It’s easy to sort and process in the recycling stream.
- It efficiently protects its contents.
Sustainability is more than a buzzword; it’s the way we need to live. Corrugated cardboard, backed by initiatives like SFI, leads us down the right path. That’s the way BoxUp is traveling.
