For Heart and Soul
“Generally speaking, I’m a science person,” says Alyssa, founder of So Good Mojo.
After the animal lover started school for animal science, she switched to civil engineering. Telecommunications became her career for over 25 years. After over two decades, the pace was simply too demanding, and she decided she needed to do some soul-searching.
“It took me three years to decide I’d had enough,” she said. “I sat down and said, ‘Alright, I want to own my own business. What can I do?'”
Alyssa started So Good Mojo, which offers crystals, essential oils, and holistic offerings. Her decision came when she decided that a horse stable, her daughterâs suggestion, wasnât financially realistic.
Alyssa searched her roots. She was raised on natural foods and mindful living, so it made sense to open a shop focused on people with earthy taste. It seemed natural to her. The lifestyle had already been part of her identity for a long time.
“Bohemian is in,” Alyssa said. “I still have a pair of yoga pants that I bought in a Grateful Dead concert parking lot!”
Driven by the need to pay her bills without all the stress, Alyssaâs store cultivates a joyful mode of living. Even though essential oils are her first love, she offers high-quality crystals at prices others canât compete with by skipping the middleman. Rifling through crystals by hand gives her a sense of pleasure but it also helps her check them thoroughly in daylight with a critical eye. Every aesthetic, from labels to blue glass bottles, receives careful consideration.
According to Alyssa, some of the details of the business come easiest to her such as time spent evaluating products, designing beautiful boxes, and picking out stickers and ribbons. She’s gifted when it comes to details, but it’s really her big heart thatâs led to her success. Alyssa cares for her customers to the point that telling them “no,” when they have unrealistic demands, makes her uncomfortable. She connects on a genuine level with others and makes friends who help guide and connect her further. More than anything, she’s found her passion.
“I love, love, love doing it,” she said.
Self-proclaimed science person Alyssa is here, using mind and soul to guide her business and brighten the world. Her advice?
